WhatsApp adds new calling feature for Android Lollipop, KitKat Users

WhatsApp has taken further step by introducing a new feature voice calling after introducing WhatsApp Web for PC, which adds to the Material UI update it still retains under its belt. Suffice it to say improvements flourish with the latest update.

The feature allows WhatsApp users to call other users free of charge using GPRS, Wifi or 3G. As per the screenshots posted, the interface appears to be so simple. No major modifications have been made. They just added a tab, which upon clicking lets you “Add calls” or make some. Next to the call tab, there is another tab for chatting, which also shows the conversations you’ve been having with your contacts.

The voice call feature on WhatsApp has the invite system that avails it to other users. With this, one user can make a call to another user, who can in turn call another user, availing the feature to them as well. In other words, you get hooked to the system by being invited by another user, after which you can call any of your contacts to avail the feature to them, too. That’s it.

Enabling the WhatsApp Calling Feature

To enable the free calling feature, first make sure your Android device is running on either KitKat 4.4 or Lollipop. Once confirmed, you can update your Messenger into the latest version by tapping the update button (Here is the link to download latest version of whatsapp directly from official website ( http://www.whatsapp.com/android/ )

As of now WhatsApp call is Invite only. So you will have to ask someone who is already using the feature to call you to avail it to you. 

Please note; WhatsApp calling is only available for KitKat and Lollipop users as per now. So in case your handset runs on anything below these two, you’d want to wait until WhatsApp releases an update that can be supported on other versions.

How to use Android Device Manager to find your lost phone

Android Device Manager comes in two parts, first, there is an app that installs on your device providing access to your device through a web interface.

Before we get started

To proceed today, you will need to have Android Device Manager installed on your Android 2.3+ device. This may sound strange to some, but you will also need to have an active Google account set on the device. Android Device Manager is free in the Google Play Store, but many manufacturers have included the app by default. Follow the set up instructions below to see if you have Android Device Manager installed before you go to install it again.

SET UP ANDROID DEVICE MANAGER

Google has been careful not to step on your toes when it comes to your privacy, as such, you will need to manually grant the Android Device Manager the required access to perform its powerful tasks on your device. There is a good chance that you said ‘yes’ to a system prompt already, but you can both verify the status and get started from scratch the simple steps below:

Head into your main system Settings.

Choose Security.

Choose Device Administrators.

Hit the check box to grant Android Device Manager access to your device.

Go ahead and exit. Believe it or not, that is all there is too it.

HOW TO USE ANDROID DEVICE MANAGER TO FIND YOUR PHONE

It should go without saying that you do not need your device at hand to use Android Device Manager, once the app is installed and set up, of course. Google has built everything you need into a handy web interface, and if you haven’t stumbled across it yet, you’ll find the link in the settings of the Google Play Store. First off, you will need to have a Google account to proceed, and you are going to need to use the same account as is set up on your Android device.

Warning: Android Device Manager can only operate if your device has battery life 
remaining and is turned on. Limited functionality is available if your device is

As you may already know, Android Device Manager is capable of performing a few different actions on your device. Primarily, you will use it to simply pinpoint the location of your missing phone. The other features vary by device, but include the ability to Ring, Lock and Erase. Let’s look at each quickly.

Using GPS to locate your device

Locating your device using Android Device Manager is almost as simple as opening the web page. It will immediately provide you the last known coordinates of your device, assuming you have not completely disabled Location Services on your gear.

To update the location, simply tap the GPS crosshairs icon and hang on a minute.

You will also find that the GPS location is not as pinpoint as you might like. Android Device Manager’s location service may not be able to tell you if your phone is in your couch cushions, under the bed or on the roof, but at least it will show you if your device is close to home, or at your school or workplace.

Please, I beg of you, if you find your phone is at a random location, take precautions in recovering your device from a stranger.

Use Ring to locate your device

You know how I said that the GPS locator may not be able to help you find your phone within your home? That’s OK, that is why there is a Ring feature.

No surprises here, simply tap the Ring button and prepare to go rummaging through that laundry pile. Your device will begin to blare, even if you had it set to silent mode.

Use Lock to protect your data

Often times, your missing device will turn up at school, work, at a restaurant or in your car. It may even end up with a stranger that has contacted you (because you have your contact info on your lock screen.) No matter where your device is, if you are certain of recovery, but are not certain you can trust the person currently holding your phone, you can lock them out.

The Lock feature of Android Device Manager is also fairly simple. Tap Lock in the web interface and your device will go into lock down.

You will be asked to apply a new password for your device, you get to write a short message that will display on the lock screen and, best of all, you can supply a phone number that the holder of the phone can easily tap to give you a shout. Not half bad.

Use Erase to say good bye to your lost device

Sometimes there is no hope of recovering your lost device. This is sad, but your private data does not have to be compromised just because you now need to go phone shopping. For this, Android Device Manager provides the Erase option, which simply triggers a full device reset.

Before you trigger Erase on your device, do keep in mind that this will not clear the data on your external microSD card. For this, there are apps like Airdroid and more than can remotely control your device, allowing you to download or wipe the data from the external memory card. You best look into those apps now though, as they can be a nuisance to set up without having your hands on the device.

Confirm your choice, and the next time your device connects to Google servers, BAM! No more data.

Chris Pederick's User Agent Switcher is an essential Firefox add-on for anybody in the business of creating mobile web sites.  This little add-on lets your Firebox (or Flock / Mozilla / Seamonkey) emulate a mobile device in its requests by sending a configurable User-Agent string. I've attached a config file to this post that contains the correct UA strings for a few common phones and the W3C Default Delivery Context. This will save you the trouble of finding the correct strings yourself. You can import this file by going to Tools | User Agent Switcher | Options | Options | User Agents | Import...

To make this add-on really useful I highly recommend putting it in the Firefox toolbar. When you do this you get a little globe button that lets you very quickly flip between different user agents (as you can see above). The globe is grey when you are using the default UA string and changes to blue/green if you have a custom UA string set. To add the button to your browser, right click the browser toolbar, click Customize... and then drag the button called User Agent to some position in the toolbar.

Torrent - The Basics

A .torrent file is a file that contains the basic information about a file or set of files. This includes the file names, sizes, the date created and some other information. The torrent file also contains an info hash – which is basically just a unique code for that torrent. No other set of file(s) will have the same info hash as this one. The final thing contained inside the torrent is a list of trackers. If you have some torrent files, you can’t open them in a text editor because they are encoded. You will need to open them in torrent client software.

A tracker is a computer on the Internet. The tracker’s role is to manage live torrent files and keep track of statistics. When you open a torrent file in your client software, your client software contacts the tracker specific to that torrent. You client tells the tracker how much of the actual files (described by the torrent) that you currently have.

A seeder is a person who has 100% of the files described by the torrent. If a torrent has no seeders, then no one (currently talking to the tracker) has anything to give.

A peer is a person who is looking for the files described by the torrent. The more peers the more people are actively looking for the files described by the torrent. A peer while downloading the file uploads it as well. When he finishes his download, he continues to upload it, thus becoming a seed.

A leech is a person who initially acts as a peer but after he finishes his download, leaves the swarm, freeing his part of bound bandwidth. Hence, if more and more people start to leech, older torrents will die out since there will be no seeds left.

A Bit Torrent client is any program that implements the Bit Torrent protocol. Each client is capable of preparing, requesting, and transmitting any type of computer over a network, using the protocol.

Working: To share a file or group of files, a user (seeder) first creates a small file called a “torrent” (e.g. MyFile.torrent). This file contains metadata about the files to be shared and about the tracker. Peers that want to download the file must first obtain a torrent file for it, and connect to the specified tracker, which tells them from which other peers to download the pieces of the file. Then the peer opens the file in a torrent client, which analyses the data stored in torrent file and downloads it from the seeder and other peer. Depending on number of seeds, and no of peers having data more than you, your download speed will be proportional. More the seeds and more the peers having more data, your download speed will be higher. But if no of peers become too high, then it causes a negative impact since there is more competition for bandwidth of seeds.

But torrent clients have this option which can limit the upload limits of data when they are acting as peers or seeds. Hence, some users misuse it to merely download and upload near nothing. Bittorrent network works on a principle of give and take, that is users who share more data while acting as peers or act as seeds once downloads complete are awarded with more download speed, while punishing those who don’t and lechers. But when a peer joins a swarm, he has no data, thus cannot seed. Hence, theoretically, he should be getting any data from seeds and other peers. But Bittorrent network has this feature of Optimistic Choking, which provides an initial bandwidth to new users, letting them download without uploading.

A few lines on downloading using torrents:

1. The first step is to download the torrent. They are available at sites of trackers. Eg, Pirate Bay, ISO hunt, Mininova, etc. Search in these sites for your required data.
2. When results turn up, choose the torrent that has maximum seeds and minimum peers, ie, greater seed/peer ratio. They help you attain more speeds. Also read comments, they are really helpful, avoiding embarrassment after having downloaded the data!
3. Having downloaded the torrent, you need a torrent client. I prefer utorrent, feature rich, light and zippy …. A good interface when compared to other clients, and equally feature rich. Compared to others like Azureus (now Vuze), it has simple settings, which can easily be tweaked. Download and install utorrent.
4. Open the Torrent file in utorrent, just double click on the file, it opens. It automatically starts downloading.
5. Depending on speed, torrent download finishes and it starts uploading itself. Do upload for a while, since there are a many users who now depend on you for the file. The more you upload, the more you get back in terms of speed. If everyone starts to leech, the torrent will die.

Scheduling torrent download tasks:

For the limited bandwidth plan users, it’s a curse to wake up late in night and start the download and again early in morning to stop it. Though utorrent comes with a scheduler, but off the happy hours, keeping utorrent active will cause long time seeding, also adding electricity bill if you keep your PC on, and waiting for happy hours.

1. Create a new Twitter account for your PC and this can be used only for the purpose or shutdown or restart.

2. Download the application and install it on your Windows.

3. Log in with the newly created twitter ID and password.

4. Now whenever you want to restart/shutdown the PC, update your Twitter account with the keyword. The keywords are- shutdown, restart, logoff.

Microsoft is ready with Windows 7

Microsoft (MSFT) said yesterday that the code for the next version of its immensely successful operating system is done. Windows 7 will replace Vista as the company’s flagship operating system when it goes on sale in PCs at the end of October.

Windows 7 may be more important to the future of the world’s largest software company than anything it has released in years.

Vista was a very limited success. A number of customers, both individuals and businesses, elected to stay with Windows XP, an earlier version of the operating system. Vista did not work well on older PCs. It was different enough from XP that many people found it hard to adapt to new futures. It was expensive. Customers could stay with XP and save the cost of upgrades.

Windows 7 is supposed to be such an important improvement over Vista that current Microsoft customers will want to get the new OS. Microsoft has dropped its pricing below what it charged for Vista. It has worked with the global software development community to assure, as much as it can, that the product will be well accepted. Early reviews of Windows 7 have been positive.

A great deal of the recent media coverage about Microsoft has been about the success of its new search engine, Bing. Microsoft’s search business is tiny compared to its software franchise. Microsoft’s online efforts also lose money while its software business has tremendous margins. Bing may be exciting, but from an earnings standpoint it is a sideshow.

Google (GOOG) has launched a number of products meant to compete with Windows, but they have a very limited number of features. A successful launch of Windows 7 would set Google’s plans back, perhaps for years.

Bing can take Microsoft’s share of the search market in the US from 9% to 20%. It can even move ahead of Yahoo! as the No.2 search company. None of that will matter much if Windows 7 is a flop.

Google Chrome OS To Be Released 2010

There is a lot of news lately with Google. What is the Google brand? Is it a Search engine? Advertising network? Free online services? A browser? Has Google now become an Operating System?



Google announced their Chrome OS to be released in 2010. Initially, it will be installed on light-weight portable NetBooks. Google Chrome OS is followed after the Chrome Browser.

Google’s primary business is search and advertising. To do so they have to get a lot of eyeballs. That is why they created the Chrome Browser. What is the point of having another browser? Well, first, the look and feel is very stripped down. Secondly and most importantly, it has true multi-threading for each tab. If a webpage you visit crashes due to a plugin, it doesn’t crash the entire browser and all your other tabs since each tab is running its own process. This is important as cloud computing becomes more and more popular. It is no different than if you are running an application on Windows XP or Mac OSX and it crashes. It should not crash your other programs as well. Once HTML 5 becomes a full standard, web applications will have just as much power as client programs and thus require stability.

The threat Google faces is competition from other companies like Microsoft. If Microsoft has another monopoly over NetBooks, they could theoretically ship a lite version of Windows with only a limited set of programs without Google. Google is playing chess and foresees this years ahead and is positioning itself to be THE online platform which it has been dominating with Gmail, Google Docs, Search, and AdSense. If a company can control the operating system or browser platform, it can be culturally significant for the future.
